HAVE YOU

have you ever felt the flame
well up behind your eye
the swell in your throat
right before the cry
have you ever felt the cave in
of your chest
from the cannon ball shot
when your knees buckle
and you’re on the floor
and you can’t breathe
you have the dry heaves
have you ever
grasped at what you could
reaching out in desperation
not ever dreaming you would
clutching what you had
have you ever wondered
if you would make it
you’re way past faking it
you’re doubled over with it
no escaping it
have you ever been caught up in it
so blinded you can’t find it, blindsided
have you ever felt lost
like you have your eyes open
under the sea, but they were just tears
still tasting like salt, still swelling your eyes
can’t see, everything distorted in me
have you ever looked at the familiar
not knowing where you were
or how you got there
and your life was different now…forever
have you
ever
felt
there
was
no
going
back
and you had to live with that?

Black Ops — Boom!
This is awesome, bro. Somewhere inside these words I hear a strange, new voice, and I like it. Your traditional narrative on social, scientific and cultural issues have turned inward, and now we get to see a little of the man behind the mask — the tell-tale heart inside the little, black box.
I can’t help but recall some hard-loved moments when I read “you’re way past faking it”, “so blinded you can’t hide it”, likening a salty sea to the tears we shed and our minds to the “fire behind our eyes.”
And maybe ‘Have You’ has it right. We can’t go back. I wonder what the ratio is between the flesh vs the spirit that truly wants to go back. I struggle with that one myself. Thanks for this one. Needed it.
Let’s talk.
